The job

This is the first position of its kind here at Circuit and, in typical start-up fashion, this is a broad role where you will tackle a whole range of technical problems. With a mix of pre-sales and second-line tech support, you’ll directly resolve ~50% of bugs that cross your desk and triage the rest, so you will need a lot of customer support experience, engineering experience, and problem-solving skills.
As the first and only member of the tech support team, you will help shape the role and the division. In the long term and as we grow the team, there are leadership opportunities for the right person.

Want to know more?

We are fully remote
Our Co-founders are in different countries, and our team is spread across Europe, Brazil, and Canada. We don’t have a head office for you to visit, and we never will.
Flexible, asynchronous working
Gives us task flexibility and work-life balance. Work around your life and at the times you do your best work.
We are bootstrapped… and profitable
Without outside investment, we are free to make our own decisions.
Equity options for everyone
Work at Circuit for a minimum of one year, vests over 5 years.
Annual company performance bonus
Paid in January and pro-rated to your start date in your joining year.
£3000 every three years for a new laptop
You buy the laptop and claim back the cost - and it’s yours to keep.
£500 a year for new tech/home office
Need a new desk, chair, keyboard, or headphones? Build a space to do your best work.
£1000 a year for your wellbeing
It is important to look after your physical and mental health and our wellness stipend is here to help our people stay healthy.
32 days of paid holiday per year
You can use it whenever you like. Four weeks in one go, one day off (almost) every other week, or anything in between.
Annual team meet-ups in 5-star locations
We get together once a year as a team so that we can collaborate, get to know each other, and have fun!
Enhanced parental leave
16 weeks on full pay and up to 52 weeks in total. Through birth or adoption, we want to make sure you have the time and resources to welcome your new addition.
There is so much more to tell you, but we can’t fit it all into one job advert! Check out our Public Handbook on our Careers Page to find out if we are right for you - getcircuit.com/jobs.

Who we are, what we do, and how it's going

Back in 2017, we saw an issue with last-mile delivery - it was too complicated and stressful for drivers. Circuit started a mission to change that by choosing to develop an app that put the driver and their customers first.
We were astounded by the response we received. Within our first year, we had almost 1,000 customers, $100k in ARR, and a team consisting of our two co-founders, Jack and Pol. Today, we now help more than 100,000 drivers deliver over 1bn packages worldwide (about 20 a second!), $20m ARR, and a lean team of ~40.

Your Skills and Experience

In short, we are looking for someone with experience in a similar role supporting customers and fixing bugs/issues and with Senior or staff-level engineering skills. Possibly, you've worked in a start-up where you covered a lot, or you have software engineering and tech support experience.
Plus:
  • Full-stack engineering/development experience, as well as technical support or sales support engineer experience (or a similar position)
  • On the frontend, JavaScript, TypeScript + React + NextJs, on the backend, all TypeScript
  • Great with customers and adept at explaining tech to non-technical folks
  • Problem-solving, reasoning, prioritizing, and independent decision-making skills
  • Spoken and written English to a high professional proficiency or native level
A typical day...
  • Solving a mix of medium and high-priority bugs, ~50% directly by contributing the fix yourself, ~25% by triaging to the appropriate team, and ~25% by realizing it’s user error and explaining the solution to them.
  • Join a customer call with our Senior Account Exec to provide technical guidance about how the implementation would go between our API and their CRM
  • A couple of async conversations with our customers who are in mid-implementation of our API and could use some guidance
  • Handle 10-15 technical support tickets, help users understand how to use our more complex functionality and how best to set up their teams
  • Make improvements to the documentation for the support team on how to handle repeat scenarios so that your future workload is reduced.
What you won't be doing
  • Daily stand-ups and fortnightly sprints. Expect ~one meeting per week. We’re not the right fit for you if you rely on regular meetings to keep on track
  • Sacrificing quality. We have high standards and won’t rush to meet an arbitrary deadline
  • Managing people. This will remain an individual contributor role, at least for now.
  • Working with junior folks. You need to be okay with doing more low-level and administrative tasks.
Apply
If have the skills and experience we need and think Circuit sounds like the place for you, we would love you to apply. Thanks!
Our hiring process
Our hiring process for this role has four stages, which usually takes ~three weeks. At every step, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and make sure that we are the right choice for you.
  1. Meet our Recruiter - You’ll have a video call with our internal recruiter, Sadie Moloney, who will tell you more about Circuit and get to know you, too.
  2. Meet the hiring team - You’ll have a video call with our Engineering Manager, Vitor, and Helena, Staff Engineer, to discuss your technical skills and experience in more detail.
  3. Paid test project - At this stage, we will invite you to take part in a take-home project (and we’ll pay you for your time) that gives you a chance to showcase your skills.
  4. Final Call - You’ll have a 30-minute final video call with our Founder and CEO, Jack Underwood, an informal chat, and an opportunity to meet and ask questions.
  5. Offer!
If you need us to make any adjustments to our interview process, or if I can make you more comfortable for our first call, please let me know. Sadie

We are looking for an amazing Operations Engineer to join the team at Cliniko in any timezone. We’re keen to find a talented Operations Engineer who works well autonomously and is passionate about what they do. They should be experienced in infrastructure automation, specifically in cloud environments, but there’s no requirement for how much experience with any specific technologies. We want someone that is looking to do their best work, in a company that will support them to do so.

What is Cliniko?

Cliniko is practice management software that makes life easy for allied health professionals by handling appointment scheduling, storing treatment notes, running video consultations, and much more. The software is used globally by 100,000+ people every day.

Our team

Behind Cliniko is a team of 55 people, spread around the world. We work completely remotely, although our base is in Melbourne, Australia. We care more about finding the best person for the job than looking for someone that lives nearby.
We don't have managers, we almost never have meetings, and there are no time sheets to complete. We're responsible, autonomous, creative, and proactive in doing our best for our customers. We're focused on making great software and we take pride in doing good work. It’s also important to us that we have a positive impact on the world.
If you want to know more about how we work, our founder, Joel, gave a talk about it.

What you'll work on

You’ll spend your time improving Cliniko. Things you might be doing include:
  • Ensuring our infrastructure remains compliant with various regional and global requirements.
  • Measuring and improving Cliniko's reliability.
  • Making and implementing recommendations on performance improvements.
  • Working with infrastructure in multiple regions around the world.
  • Improving logging, monitoring, and alerts (observability).
  • Improving deployment processes (containers to Kubernetes).
  • Optimising spend.
  • Anything else you think needs doing.
Our goal is to do right by our customers and you’ll be working on making Cliniko better for them.

About you

While we use the term 'Operations Engineer', in practice what you'll do will align closely with a site reliability engineer (SRE) or platform engineer role. It's worth mentioning there may be times when you will be needed outside your regular working hours, but that shouldn’t be a regular occurrence.
You want to work in a place where you can do your best work and have fun, too. You want to constantly improve. You have empathy, and can place yourself into the shoes of the people using Cliniko. You’re excited by the opportunity to make a real difference with your work.
You love infrastructure automation and enjoy when there's a nice docker container or helm chart to work with. You're interested or at least familiar with some of the concepts in Google's SRE book (error budget, SLI, etc.). You try to automate as much as possible, but can also weigh the cost and benefit of automating everything. You care about the security of systems and services. Unencrypted communications make you uncomfortable. You dream about deployment pipelines. You appreciate not only the beauty in simplicity, but also the practical benefits. Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, and experience with deploying containerised apps would be a bonus!
No matter what your background is, or how you identify, if you feel you would be a great fit here, we encourage you to apply. We are committed to the continual diversification of the team and working to constantly improve our inclusivity, which is crucial to how we work.

How we work

Here are some things we do a little differently to enable people to do their best work and live a happy life:
  • 30-hour work week, full-time pay.
  • Flexible hours, choose when you work.
  • Work from anywhere.
  • Unlimited annual leave (minimum 4 weeks per year).
  • Supplied computer equipment.
  • Ergonomic furniture.
  • Fresh organic fruit delivered weekly to your home.
  • Overseas trips for team meet-ups.
  • No managers.
  • No scheduled meetings.

How to apply

The "Apply for this position" button will take you to the application form with a few questions. The “short friendly summary” field needs to give us enough information to be interested in taking you to the next stage. We typically get a lot of applications (hundreds at a minimum), so do put some effort into this section please. Notably, there's no resume or cover letter submission, so this is your spot to give us some insight into who you are. And please be yourself, there’s no need for formality.
There'll be a few other short questions, including one about our security features. It's important to answer that one correctly, as we won’t consider any applications that get that wrong.
We recommend not using AI to write your application, it will most likely lead to rejection.
Note: While the form does allow you to upload a resume, it’s only to pre-fill the contact fields for you. We won’t actually see the resume.
Job applications close end of day 27th of May, 2024 AEST.

After you've applied

Once you’ve applied, sit back and relax while we get to work on our side! We’ll be reviewing all the applications as they come in and we’ll get back to you within 2 weeks after applications close at the latest. Everyone will hear back from us, successful or not.
If we select you for the next stage, it will be a short 5 minute chat with our founder, Joel. Following the chat, if you’re still a contender, there’ll be a technical task to complete. These tasks are paid.
Lastly, you’d meet with some people from our team and then we’ll make the final decision. This is the exciting part for us and hopefully also for the chosen person: we’ll hire them to join our team! This will happen fast, and the start date will be chosen by the applicant.
We know it’s quite a process to go through, so we want to make sure you know what you’re in for up front. We’ll be transparent with everyone along the way.
One final note, unfortunately due to the quantity of applications we receive, we are not able to provide feedback for those not successful in the first round. In the later stages, we’ll do our best to provide what we can, if requested.
Good luck!

Hi there,
My name’s Carrie and I run operations at Course Concierge (courseconcierge.com) – a publishing house that creates online courses with well-known YouTubers and other experts.
Our courses have hundreds of thousands of paying students, and our clients' videos are seen by tens of millions of people every month.
For the right person, this is a Dream Job — and dream company.
If you are someone who…
- Wants to excel in your career and takes pride in active and stimulating work
- Is looking for a shot to prove yourself
- Gets excited at the prospect of learning a tremendous amount, with fast-paced and varied demands
- Has the ability to work within tight deadlines and juggle multiple tasks with poise
…this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
We’re a great company to join. Here’s why…
- We have a small, lean, and unbelievably engaged team, with world-class people.
- Our clients are fantastic. We only take on a handful and are incredibly selective in who we work with (a number are household names you have heard of).
- You can work from anywhere in the world. Our current team spans three continents.
- You will have support from our brilliant lead developer, the dependability of a team, and consistent income.
This position is the right fit for…
…Someone who really wants it.
A developer is the backbone of an online company, and relied on more than anyone. Without the right developers, the rest of the team can’t function.
The perfect fit for us is someone who is already very good, but who wants to learn and is hungry to become the best of the best.
We’re looking for a second developer to join our team.
You will be working alongside our Senior Developer on maintaining existing online courses and building new courses, all built with WordPress.
And, you'll also work closely with members of our in-house course production team, who will have eyes on maintaining a great experience from the customer's perspective.
You need to…
- Like a big workload and be comfortable working quickly. We like to get a lot done in a day and you will be pushed
- Welcome revisions and embrace our perfectionist tendencies (as well as our clients’)
- Help us refine our technical processes
- Be a clear and capable communicator. As a company, we take writing seriously. Great English and attention to detail are essential.
- Be someone we love working with! Fit comes first, above everything else for us.
Nearly all of our communication is written (we use Basecamp and are big fans of it), but we’d like you to be comfortable getting on the occasional Zoom call, too.
You will be needed for the following…
Throughout each project, we have the following development needs.
1. Lay the foundation
  • Setup of a client’s domain and hosting, and integration of a payment gateway, membership plugin and email platform. We do everything on WordPress.
2. Create a stunning email capture page
  • From our design team’s PSDs, everything you create needs to be wonderfully responsive, and no stone (from the thank you page to a nicely formatted confirmation email) left unturned.
3. Build a long-form sales page
  • Our designers make sales pages that are many thousands of words digestible and enticing to read. We need you to do their work justice.
4. Creation of membership area
  • Using a WordPress membership plugin, create a layout that houses a course with clear and simple navigation.
  • We always look to enhance the user experience for clients’ customers and deliver the best learning environment possible.
5. E-commerce development
  • Making sure payments are taken via our e-commerce plugin, membership entitlements are correct, and segments are created in a newsletter platform for buyers.
6. Maintenance and support
  • Performing scheduled and not scheduled maintenance and security updates on our WordPress sites
  • Contributing to our QA procedure for all things related to our websites
  • Helping the rest of team who work on our site solve their day-to-day operational  issues
7. Ongoing development
  • Maintaining and expanding with new features our custom theme and plugins
  • Developing and maintaining integrations with various third party APIs
The position is right for you if…
- You completely understand how WordPress works at the code level. You have built your own custom themes/plugins and you know how to extend WordPress core. Having experience with any of the following is a plus: Astra Theme, Easy Digital Downloads, LifterLMS, Beaver Builder.
- You understand how REST APIs work and you are comfortable consuming RESTful web services, either via the client (AJAX) or the server (PHP).
- You like finding smart and elegant solutions to coding problems, in line with WordPress coding and security best practices. Your code is clean, understandable and well commented.
- You have solid knowledge of PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript/JQuery, CSS. Experience on any kind of front-end framework (i.e. Bootstrap) or Javascript framework is a plus.
- You are competent with version control systems (Git), and having experience with modern web development workflows and tools is a plus.
- You communicate clearly in written and spoken English, not only with other developers, but also with non-technical colleagues.
*
Even though this is a part-time role for now, we are looking for someone who wants to be a fully integrated member of our team over the long term.
The position will start at approximately 20 hours per week, and pay will be set at a competitive flat monthly rate. (Or hourly, if you prefer.)
To apply…
Please email me with a brief note on why you think you’d be a great fit.
In your note, please include the following:
  • Only ONE example of a website you have coded in Wordpress, which uses a custom theme or one or more custom plugins that you have developed
  • Where you are located
  • Your experience and fluency in Wordpress
Send your email to: email
Do NOT send more than one link or your entry will be disqualified.
Also, please do not send a resume, CV or attachment of any kind. We don’t care where you went to college (or that you even went at all) — all that matters is whether you can do it.
We won’t be able to get back to everyone, but for those who stand out, we will send a list of interview questions in writing, then, for the few we like best, set up a brief Zoom call to discuss the opportunity.
The deadline for submissions is May 15th, though those who apply sooner have an advantage. We are looking to get started working together right away.
Thank you for reading. Best of luck, and I look forward to hearing from you!

We're particularly interested in your experience with Shopify API, Shopify CLI, or GraphQL API. Even if these experiences are not part of your repertoire, we value your expertise with integrations on other platforms. If available, we’d love if you can share any public app or API documentation from those platforms.
Beyond technical expertise, success in this role means embodying these three core values:

  • Knowledge of DevOps & Infrastructure (AWS) is nice to have
