We’re a diverse team of experienced researchers and engineers scattered around the world working at the intersection of P2P networks and bleeding-edge Zero Knowledge technology. We’re building the next generation storage engine that attempts to “untie the knot” of incentivized storage. We’re looking for an experienced P2P Networking Protocol Engineer with hands-on experience designing and implementing state of the art networking protocols and distributed systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain state of the art p2p protocols and decentralized storage solutions
• Coordinate with the ongoing testing efforts to identify and eliminate instabilities in the existing codebase and bring it to production levels quality
• Implement and design new features as part of roadmap milestones

You ideally will have

• Strong academic or engineering background (PhD-level or equivalent in industry); relevant research experience
• Experience with low level libp2p primitives
• Experience with low level/strongly typed languages (C/C++/Go/Rust or Java/C#)
• Experience with Open Source software
• Keen communicator, eager to share your work in a wide variety of contexts, like internal and public presentations, blog posts and academic papers
• Strong networking (P2P systems) background
• Good debugging skills
• Good at explaining a complicated issue at varying levels of complexity for others to understand
• A strong alignment to our principles

Bonus points if

• Familiarity with the Nim programming language
• Familiarity with zero-knowledge proofs and other ZK-technology
• Familiarity with advanced cryptographic hashing functions

Responsibilities:

• Design and develop scalable Web3 backend APIs, enabling seamless interaction between backend and frontend applications and the blockchain, ensuring high availability and performance for millions of users worldwide.
• Develop and maintain backend services for smart contract interaction, ensuring seamless integration and communication between smart contracts and the application layer. Focus on creating robust APIs and middleware that facilitate secure and efficient interactions with the blockchain, handling tasks such as event listening, transaction processing, and on-chain data retrieval.
• Specialize in smart contract lifecycle management, from writing and deploying smart contracts to conducting automated testing and security audits. Ensure the reliability and security of smart contracts through rigorous validation processes, upgrades, and optimizations to support flawless execution on the blockchain.
• Optimize blockchain data processing, implementing efficient methods for ingesting, storing, and querying on-chain data to support real-time analytics and user-facing applications.
• Collaborate on cross-functional projects, working closely with front-end developers and product teams to integrate blockchain functionalities into user-centric applications, enhancing overall user experience.
• Implement best practices for blockchain security, staying ahead of the latest in smart contract vulnerabilities, and employing rigorous security measures and auditing processes to safeguard all deployed contracts and back-end systems.

Requirements

• You can work autonomously on research, spec, implementation, deployment, monitoring and patching your code
• You are comfortable with Software Engineering (and a little bit of DevOps)
• You’ve extensive experience in shipping production-grade code that handles thousands of user interactions/transactions
• 4 years experience with either Node.js/TypeScript
• 4 years experience with highly scalable Web API engineering
• Strong experience with high throughput Database systems
• Strong experience with maintaining scalable microservices systems
• Good experience with distributed systems and/or container orchestration
• Strong interest in Web3/crypto industry
• Experience using crypto applications (e.g. Uniswap, Aave, etc.)

Not essential, but big bonus points:

• Experience with Web3 libraries and backend development (e.g. ethers.js, viem)
• Experience in Solidity smart contract development
• Knowledge about the inner workings of the EVM

About Vac

Vac builds public good protocols for the decentralized web. We do applied research based on which we build protocols, libraries and publications.

The role

We are seeking an experienced Distributed Systems Evaluation Engineer to join the Vac DST team. This role focuses on rigorously assessing the performance and reliability of IFT projects at scale. You’ll be responsible for designing and executing comprehensive evaluation strategies, leveraging both large-scale lab deployments and protocol behavior modeling scripts. Your expertise will be crucial in analyzing these complex distributed systems, automating intricate test scenarios, and providing in-depth insights into system behaviors.

Working closely with cross-functional teams, you’ll troubleshoot complex issues and translate technical data into actionable recommendations. Proficiency in containerization, cloud technologies, and distributed systems principles is essential.

This position offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on the robustness and scalability of IFT projects, contributing to the development of next-generation decentralized technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain sophisticated tools for analyzing distributed systems at scale, ensuring robust and efficient testing processes.
