We want people who are badass but also humble and care about helping their team. We want people who get shit done and give a shit. We want people who don't care about titles but care about results.
We are asking for a lot. What we can offer you?
- A legitimate meritocracy. We don't care if you fancy huh, we care if you are actually good at your job. Been passed over for the guy who's great at talking to the EVP about how you just need to move to microservices but just pushed several critical bugs to production? That will not happen here.
- The ability to work with other people like you. And the joy of not having to work with people who aren't - no shitty devs, assholes, or devs who spend 2 hours a day working and 6 hours on TikTok and spreading office gossip.
- An intensive onboarding bootcamp where you will be challenged, tested, and learn a ton. While we don't like firing people or having them quit, we care more about guaranteeing #2 and this process is meant to weed people out who aren't a fit.
- A highly supportive atmosphere. We have a high standard for performance, but we will do everything we can to help each individual attain it. Everyone at all levels of the company is willing to pitch in and provide advice, mentorship, or even jump in to get our hands dirty coding, organizing the backlog, or talking to
clients when a team needs extra support. We're in this together.
- The ability to work on some of the most exciting technical and product challenges that exist today. We work with clients, who bring us in to work on their most critical and important tasks because they know we can deliver and on our own internal projects which solve real needs. We also work on complex blockchain
projects with legitimate use cases. We also build best-in-class web and mobile applications and have some of the world's best data scientists.
- The ability to work on a range of projects in different fields, industries, and stacks for companies ranging from early-stage startups to enterprise.
- Competitive pay with regular performance-based raises and other fun stuff including company retreats, a really nice office, health and pet insurance, a cake to embarass you on your birthday, etc.STACK
You will be working mostly with JavaScript and libraries/frameworks in its ecosystem.
- JavaScript / TypeScript
- React / Angular / Nullstack
- Node / Next.js / Apollo
- EVMs / Solidity
- Flow / Cadence
- Solana / Metaplex / Rust
- Truffle / Hardhat
- web3.js / ethers.js
- Everything else in the JavaScript ecosystem
YOU WILL
- Work Full-time.
- Work with a 10x dev team.
- Work in internal projects and client projects.
- Build projects with a product focused mentality while keeping your code clean.
- Build modern, efficient apps and test that they work correctly.
- Constantly communicate with clients.
- Review pull requests from other members of the team.
- Have a founder mentality and proactively solve problems.
- Wear any hats needed to get the job done.
About You
- Ability to communicate effectively and work exclusively in English. (This is a must)
- A minimum of 5+ years of programming experience with our stack.
- realizing in the middle of the night you forgot a major edge case that you can’t believe hasn’t burned you yet and need to fix asap
- git blaming some shitty code and realizing it was you, deciding to never git blame again
- having some super strong preference about the way something “needs to be done” that you read in a book, forum, conference or fancy colleague, being super militant about enforcing it and judgemental about people
who don’t already do it. and then realizing this was wrong
- you had a stack you thought was universally superior but now you think people should just pick the right tool for the job
- being such an expert at something that you forget why anyone would think this is hard, then having to learn something new and sucking at it at first and remembering that programming actually is a skill, then getting
really great at that
- Willing to work with new technologies, different environments.
- Willing to work with everything and anything, Full Stack.
- Experience working with Agile.
- Growth mindset.
- Like your work and accomplish many things.
- Ownership mentality.

- Disclaimer: If you leave on good terms, you can retain 20% of your equity if you continue to send leads our way, share our core values, etc. If you leave for project (or someone else's), you retain 100% of your equity. Folks create exponentially more value here in their 3rd and 4th years than their 1st or 2nd - we want folks

Building the Future of Crypto

Our Krakenites are a world-class team with crypto conviction, united by our desire to discover and unlock the potential of crypto and blockchain technology.

What makes us different?

Kraken is a mission-focused company rooted in crypto values. As a Krakenite, you’ll join us on our mission to accelerate the global adoption of crypto, so that everyone can achieve financial freedom and inclusion. For over a decade, Kraken’s focus on our mission and crypto ethos has attracted many of the most talented crypto experts in the world.

Before you apply, please read the Kraken Culture page to learn more about our internal culture, values, and mission.

As a fully remote company, we have Krakenites in 70+ countries who speak over 50 languages. Krakenites are industry pioneers who develop premium crypto products for experienced traders, institutions, and newcomers to the space. Kraken is committed to industry-leading security, crypto education, and world-class client support through our products like Kraken ProKraken NFT, and Kraken Futures.

Become a Krakenite and build the future of crypto!

Proof of Work

The Team

Our team is focused on Kraken’s cryptocurrency operations: creating secure, reliable, and resilient services that handle client deposits and withdrawals across an ever-expanding universe of cryptocurrencies and blockchains. Ensuring the safety of our client’s assets is our top priority, while still delivering timely processing of transactions. Behind the scenes, we’re also building tools and services that allow us to transfer and rebalance funds to ensure continued operations (e.g. hot-to-cold, regional, and/or cross-chain transfer of assets), publish regular Proof-Of-Reserves reports to the public, and provide crucial information and insights to other teams, and lots more!

Perseverance is key, crypto presents new challenges all the time and our clients are trusting us with their financial lives every day. There will be new tokens, new Layer 2s, and even a few Layer 1s along the way. You’ll need to build and maintain trusting relationships with each of your team members and peers (including cross-functional ones!) in order to succeed. It’s a true team effort as we work alongside our security, SRE, product, client experience, data, and other engineering teams to bring new things to life, and we do it all while assuming the best intent of our colleagues and acting with professionalism!

This role is ideal for a hands-on people and technical leader that’s passionate about crypto and software engineering. You understand the tech and what’s going on at ground level and facilitate your team into making great decisions, but you’re careful not to let your own opinions outweigh those of others, and strike a healthy balance between trusting the way your team does things currently and challenging them to strive for something better. You find ways to make your team better and deliver: expedite a process, get rid of a blocker, get repetitive work off team members by handling it and/or automating it, and more.

The Opportunity

  • Manage and grow a team of highly qualified and experienced engineers

  • Responsible and accountable for facilitating and contributing to deliverables

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality services in TypeScript (Node) and Rust

  • Spend about 25% of your time writing code, we expect Engineering Managers to have their own ground truth and opinions formed through first hand experience, but not necessarily be “the expert”

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Security, Product, Finance, Design, and Client Experience, to ensure seamless integration of new features and improvements

  • Maintain a security-first mindset by staying informed of the latest trends in blockchain technologies, and Web3 in general

  • Help scale the team by hiring and growing passionate engineers committed to excellence

  • Lead by example and nurture talent in a crypto-focused team, focusing on the growth of developers and ensuring their workload leaves them both challenged and fulfilled

  • Help identify, analyze, and resolve bottlenecks and inefficiencies in processes and codebases

  • Own, drive, and be accountable to KPIs pertaining to reliability, resiliency, durability, and uptime. Most of all, ensuring the continuity of crypto operations

Skills You Should HODL

  • Deep understanding of the Ethereum ecosystem and EVM

  • 7+ years of experience in software development

  • 2+ years proven track record of managing high performance engineering teams

  • Hands-on experience in blockchain or web3 applications, familiar with EVM and contract interaction details

  • Great generalist skills, able to engage new code/technologies at a surface level quickly

  • Proficiency in TypeScript (Node) and/or Rust

  • Familiarity with modern build pipelines and tooling

  • Deep knowledge of software development and delivery best practices; you can identify bottlenecks and/or obstacles holding back your team and find ways to help them move faster

  • Experience driving solutions to key business problems, especially navigating and resolving ambiguity

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience

  • Build dependable and beautiful frontends across the idOS stack: our Data Dashboard, the Secure Enclave, product demos, and more.
  • Write reliable SDKs enabling developers to seamlessly interact with the idOS and provide users with a magical experience.
  • Contribute to our developer documentation and tooling to make idOS integration the smoothest developer experience in web3.

  • expanding support across even more chains (more EVMs, Solana, etc)
  • making idOS even easier to understand and integrate, ideally by removing as many clicks and function calls as possible
  • deployment of novel encryption and zk tech towards bolstering user privacy and easing development experience

Role and responsibilities

  • Build reliable and highly-available backend services for authentication, authorization, blockchain interaction, and indexing.
  • Build secure, upgradable smart contracts across several blockchain infrastructures.
  • Write reliable SDKs enabling developers to seamlessly interact with the idOS and provide users with a magical experience.
  • Contribute to our developer documentation and tooling to make idOS integration the smoothest developer experience in web3.
  • Create applications showing off the full potential of the idOS.
  • Drive idOS innovation by staying abreast of new trends, patterns, and tools we can use to keep our applications secure and on the bleeding edge.
  • Communicate effectively, clearly articulate ideas, and engage productively with us to help us make better decisions.
  • Clearly and frequently communicate progress and concerns in an actionable manner.
  • Work in a highly collaborative open source ecosystem, writing and reviewing understandable code we can be proud of.
  • Help our integrators succeed by helping them with integration architecture and technical support. Our success comes from their success.

Requirements

  • You have 2+ years of professional experience with solidity and/or vyper.
  • You have 3+ years of professional experience with distributed systems (you know when to use ZeroMQ vs. Kafka vs. MQTT vs. NATS, etc).
  • You’re experienced in shipping production code, and dealing with very different load profiles. You’re comfortable architecting a solution for 1 rps to 1k rps, from a few MB to a lot of TB.
  • You’re comfortable in modern UNIX environments. You know how to use strace, lsof, cgroups, etc., and bash lines like find . -type f | xargs sed -i … don’t scare you.
  • You don’t shy away from frontend work. It’s ok if you can’t do SVG or animations, but you wouldn’t think twice about adding a new React Provider and passing some props around.

About us

Flashbots started in 2020 as a research and development organization formed to mitigate the negative externalities and existential risks posed by Maximal Extractable Value (MEV). Since then, we have had an immense impact on the world of crypto through mev-geth, Flashbots Protect, MEV-Boost, MEV-Share, our open research and soon-to-be SUAVE.

Our mission is clear: illuminate, democratize and distribute.

We seek to ensure that the value created on decentralized, public blockchains is transparent and distributed. We do this by conducting cutting-edge research, building mission-critical products, and coordinating a diverse community with competing interests.

Our vibe is astro-pirate-punk: irreverent, anarchic, excellent, autonomous. We’re explorers, hackers, builders, thinkers. We are relaxed, composed, and at ease in the world, but beneath our suave exterior, we do not have the time or inclination to be anything but the best.

About the role:

Flashbots is searching for a Senior Backend Engineer with a focus on distributed systems and scaling to join our team. This role is ideal for a proactive problem solver with a penchant for deep technical challenges, strong communication skills, and a builder mentality.

You’ll be helping contribute to a cutting-edge distributed system, navigating nuanced tradeoffs between latency, privacy, fault tolerance, and incentives.

What You’ll Do:

  • Contribute to the development and scaling of Flashbots products, specifically SUAVE and SUAPPS.
  • Collaborate with the best mechanism design researchers in the industry to build products at the intersection of incentives and distributed systems.
  • Maintain and enhance protocol services and developer tools within the Flashbots ecosystem.
  • Write and manage technical documentation and diagrams for public and internal use.
  • Participate actively in community and partner with leading crypto projects.
  • Write well-tested code.

Who You Are:

  • 4-10 years of experience in production systems, skilled in Rust or Go.
  • Proven experience in distributed systems
  • You find problems to solve, rather than waiting for issues to pile up.
  • Strong OSS blockchain projects/contributions in Ethereum projects
    • please feel free to contact email with links to relevant PRs or meaningful public contributions in order to skip the queue.
  • Capable of independently leading projects and unifying cross-functional teams through exceptional communication and collaboration skills.
  • Familiar with blockchain or distributed system protocol standards.
  • Flexible, accountable, and focused on high-impact solutions.
  • T-Shaped skills

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Ethereum, Geth, or other Ethereum clients
    • Adjacent infrastructure (e.g., indexers or p2p overlays).
  • Worked with Solidity or other smart contract languages.
  • You have contributed to open-source work/projects or participate in public technical discourse, such as contributing to protocol specifications.

Details that matter

  • Significantly above market rate equity compensation package
  • Unlimited PTO with a high level of freedom and autonomy for your work
  • Attractive health coverage package for US employees
  • $3000 Yearly budget for your individual learning and development goals
  • Work alongside the brightest minds in the crypto space
  • Help save the world by ensuring crypto remains decentralized, permissionless and censorship-resistant
  • Remote working - work from anywhere in the world
  • Paid travel - 2 x team on-site in different parts of the world per year plus periodic travel to events
