THANK YOU! :)

Aiir is hiring a Senior Developer

About the Job
You'll be working on building new products, maintaining existing ones, and creating new features to delight our customers.
Your work will span front and back end. On the front, you'll be creating accessible user interfaces, beautifully functional components, and working closely with our design team to forge the best customer experience.
On the back, you'll be writing APIs, working with databases and serverless functions, looking after the health of our infrastructure, and considering how our products are deployed to the cloud and into the hands of users.
Initially, this role will be fully focussed on our new cloud-native music Scheduler product. You will get up to speed on how this product has been built, how it's deployed, what work is in progress, and the kinds of things we might like to tackle next. The product is about to go to market and will receive a lot of feedback, so things will move fast.
A strong understanding and experience working in Node.js is absolutely crucial for this, above anything else. Experience in AWS, in particular Lambda, would put you at a strong advantage. A bonus would be familiarity with the Architect framework which the product is built on.
In time, your responsibilities will expand to our other products. Some of the languages and frameworks you'd be using there include PHP, Twig, MySQL and React / React Native. We also utilise plenty of other AWS services, like RDS, Elasticache, CloudFront, S3 and SQS.
About You
You'll be experienced in building and maintaining modern web applications. You need to be passionate about native web standards, custom web components, and "HTML over the wire", all of which are cornerstones of the Scheduler product you'll be working on.
This is a remote position based in the United Kingdom. It's important for this role that you can relatively easily travel to meet and occasionally co-work with colleagues in the same team.
We're looking for someone who excels at working autonomously. As we work remotely, we're unable to watch over your shoulder, but frankly we'd never want to anyway. You love using your initiative and judgement to see something through, from idea to completion. You're fiercely organised, reliable and have a keen eye for detail.
Direct experience in everything we do is not required. What's important is that you're creative and curious. Show up willing to learn and you'll go far.

MANUAL's evidence-based approach has been proven to enroll young men who are not currently being reached by existing services, and users report significant levels of trust towards the service.

Are you passionate about crafting efficient and scalable applications? Do you want to use your skills to help thousands of young men around the country? If you're enthusiastic about full stack Typescript, and love the thrill of a startup, we'd love to talk to you!

Who We're Looking For:

Typescript Enthusiasts: You have a solid understanding of Typescript and the JS ecosystem. You've built or contributed to web applications and APIs using these technologies and are excited about crafting beautiful, efficient, and scalable web applications. You've written production frontend and backend code.

Problem Solvers: Complex challenges excite you, and you excel at finding innovative solutions. You understand that in a startup environment, delivering a functional solution that meets users' needs is more critical than crafting a perfect solution that never launches.

Team Players: Our small but growing team values collaboration and open communication. Your input will significantly impact our projects, and we value engineers who are humble and willing to assist their peers.

Lifelong Learners: Your willingness to learn and grow is vital. We appreciate those open to new ideas and experiences, understanding that everyone has something to teach.

What You Won't Need:

  • A specific number of years of experience. Your ability to apply what you've learned to new challenges is what truly matters to us. We're not in a position to provide the support and mentorship a very junior developer needs (ex. fresh out of college or dev bootcamp), so you should have experience shipping production code.
  • A formal education in computer science. We recognize the value of diverse educational backgrounds and learning paths. Our head of engineering, for example, doesn't have a computer science degree.

What You'll Do:

  • Contribute to the development of our RedwoodJS-based web application, potentially setting the direction for this greenfield project.
  • Assist in the management of our Postgres database and backend infrastructure.
  • Contribute to our React Native and NextJS apps
  • Engage in user feedback sessions to directly learn from our users and adapt our solutions to better meet their needs.
  • Be involved in the hiring process for future engineering team members, helping us grow our team with talented individuals.
  • Play a pivotal role in defining our engineering processes and culture.
  • Collaborate closely with our head of engineering and other team members on a variety of backend and frontend projects, contributing your unique skills and perspectives.

Important Details

  • Job Type: Full-time, remote work environment with occasional optional travel for team get-togethers.
  • Compensation structure: We are considering engineers with a range of experience and skill for this role, and will make cash offers of $115k-$140k per year. A competitive equity plan will be provided.
  • Benefits: Fully covered (no employee contribution) Health, Dental, and Vision insurance. Unlimited PTO.

Hiring Process

  • You submit your application, if we select you for an interview we'll reach out to schedule...
  • 30 minute intro call with Karl Morand, our head of engineering. This call will be focused on getting to know you, your background, experience, and answering any questions you have about MANUAL or the role. We won't get into anything super technical (no live coding or anything like that). A list of some topics/questions will be provided to you before the interview - the goal is to see you at your best, not test your ability to remember anecdotes from your past under pressure.
  • Take home project is the next step. You will have at least 5 days to complete the project. The goal of the project isn't to nitpick your code, but rather to give us a starting point to discuss how you approach solving problems with code.
  • 45 minute technical call with Karl Morand, our head of engineering. In this call we'll use your take home project as the basis of our discussion on how you approach solving problems. All candidates who complete the take home project will advance to this stage. This call will include a more detailed discussion of your technical experience and knowledge. Specific topics of interest will be provided to the candidate when the interview is scheduled. While this call is more technical in nature, there is still no live coding. Candidates who successfully complete this stage advance to...
  • 30 minute teammate interview with 1-2 other members of the MANUAL team. You'll be working closely with everyone on our small team, so it's important for you and us to feel confident that we'll make a great team. You'll receive information about the interviewers and topics when the call is scheduled. Candidates who successfully complete this stage advance to...

We ❤️ startups & SMBs. Since 2013, we’ve been building a CRM  that focuses on better communication, without the hassle of manual data entry or complex UI. Our goal: double the productivity of every sales rep.
Our app’s frontend is a single-page JavaScript web app mostly written in React (originally built with Backbone.js). We bundle with Webpack and target only modern browsers. We test with Jest and React Testing Library. Our UI updates in near real-time and is written in LESS/CSS (with flexbox and grid layout) using CSS modules and takes advantage of fun technologies like Websockets and WebRTC. We house our design system in Storybook.
We care about performance (e.g. route-based code splitting), maintainability, and testability of our frontend code. We sweat the UI/UX details and work collaboratively with the Product team throughout the design process. This means diving into lo-fi wireframes, and communicating continuously when those ideas are brought to life using Figma and code.
Our frontend app is built on top of our REST API & GraphQL endpoints. Our backend tech stack consists of Python/Flask, MongoDB, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Redis. We run our services in Docker on AWS.
We ❤️ open sourcing our code and ideas on our GitHub and on The Making of Close, our behind-the-scenes Product & Engineering blog. Check our projects such as react-custom-scroller, use-infinite-scroll, use-abortable-effect, and smart-tooltip-delay or insights from our day-to-day work on such as Highlights From a Complex Downshift.js Refactor, A Case Study in"Reactizing" a Complex Backbone View, and Finding the cause of a memory leak in Jest tests.
About You
We're looking for an experienced full-time (or part-time) Frontend Software Engineer to join our engineering team. Someone who has a solid understanding of web technologies and wants to help design, implement, and launch major user-facing features.
You should have senior level experience (~5 years) building modern frontend applications in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, with at least 3 years of that experience using React.
You should have significant experience designing, debugging, and optimizing frontend applications to make them fast and reliable. You have significant experience with REST APIs and thoroughly understand HTTP requests. You have experience participating in code reviews and providing overall code quality suggestions to help maintain the structure and quality of the codebase.
You should have great product sense and be able to think through user experience issues before diving into the code, and you exhibit a love for great UI.
You’re comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a small and talented team where you're supported in your efforts to grow professionally. You are able to manage your time well, communicate effectively and collaborate in a fully distributed team.
Note: this role requires you to be located in an Americas time zone. If you're not located in one of these time zones, check out our other posting here
We are open to hiring mid, senior and staff level engineers for this role.
Bonus points if you have...
  • Experience implementing real-time (e.g. websockets, polling, etc.) web apps
  • Experience working with GraphQL endpoints
  • An eye for design and experience with Figma, Sketch, Abstract, Photoshop, or similar
  • Led small project teams building and launching features
  • Contributed open source code (core or plugins) for a popular frontend framework such as React, Vue, or Angular
  • Built B2B SaaS products
  • Experience with sales or sales tools
Come help us with projects like...

Hello! We’re Bellawatt! We’ve been remote, bootstrapped, and profitable for 7+ years. We work in the energy industry, building software for clients such as electric utilities and solar installation companies.
We’re looking for a senior lead full-stack engineer to build web applications that help accelerate electrification. Publicly available examples include PG&E's Energy Efficiency Marketplace: https://guide.pge.com/
Compensation and Benefits
We know this section is a pass/fail filter in your job search, so let’s get right to it:
  • $145k/yr salary for US-based candidates; $115k/yr salary for Canada-based candidates
  • Fully remote work environment
  • Health insurance
  • 401(k) plan
  • Macbook provided
  • Home office budget
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Learning budget
  • Something missing? We’re small enough to try to make it work. Let’s chat!
How We Work
We are organized into small teams of 2-4 people working on 2-18 month long projects, often in greenfield codebases.
  • Engineers typically work on 1 to 2 engagements at a time in order to minimize context switching. Engagements often have multiple follow-on phases because we earn our clients’ trust.
  • We have an async-first culture with few scheduled meetings and a lot of writing. We value deep work time.
  • Sustainable hours. We are highly self-motivated folks, and we work really hard to meet our goals. But we value work life balance and know that fresh minds work better. Long or weekend hours are vanishingly rare here.
In a typical week, you will spend ~3 days writing code, ~1 day supporting a project (planning, scheduling, reporting), and ~1 day days supporting colleagues (code review, knowledge sharing, dev tooling).
Here are some real tasks that Bellawatt developers have done in the recent past:
  • Expand a complicated background process that synchronizes and normalizes data from multiple external data sources into a datastore that we control
  • Build an admin UI that controls aspects of the data synchronization
  • Estimate future projects. Evaluate which time estimates are risky and plan how to address the risk.
  • Build a prototype to test functionality of an API for a future project
  • Build a rich, interactive JavaScript UI that calculates the financial impact of an electric vehicle on a person’s electricity bill.
About You
Here are the skills you’ll need to succeed at Bellawatt:
  • Production experience with Ruby on Rails and React.
  • Strong project skills. Our small teams are so effective because we work together towards our goals. That means being responsible for hitting deadlines (or having the confidence to gently push back on them!) and helping our product team manage a project.
  • Self sufficiency. You should have the ability to manage your own time, unblock yourself and unblock your team. That is not to say you should never get stuck! Part of self sufficiency is knowing when to raise your hand for help, and we like to help each other.
  • A writer at heart. You enjoy communicating complex ideas via text. You proofread, even when sharing “rough drafts”.  You use writing to clarify your thinking.
  • Curious tenacity. If you have to occasionally pull yourself out of a rabbit hole because a problem just won’t let go of your curiosity, then you’ll fit in here.
How to Apply
We are excited to add a new colleague! And we won’t waste your time - our interview process is straightforward:
  1. Fill out our application form at https://forms.gle/ePWjEcd1XQHXif3y7. If you email us, we'll likely miss it!
  2. An Informal Interview (30 min) where we get to know each other and discuss expectations. If there’s mutual interest, we’ll ask you for a recent writing sample (something you’ve written previously about a complicated technical topic) and send a couple questions for you to answer in writing.
  3. A Technical Interview (2 hours) where we code together in VSCode’s LiveShare. We will be collaboratively looking at problems inspired by things we actually work on – no bubble sorts or leetcode trick questions. You should have a clear sense of whether you’ll like working with us after we wrap up.
  4. A Case Study (90 min) that seeks to simulate what it would be like for us to actually work together on a project, including a Product team member.
  5. We’ll send you an offer within a week.
That’s it! We don’t like drawn-out interview processes any more than you do. Looking forward to connecting!
